After all this rain and not being able to fish my usual places it was really really nice to get on the water yesterday. It was quite chilly when we arrived shortly after first light, but there wasn't a cloud in the sky! Once the sun came up over the hills it was amazingly warm even though the shade still had quite a bit of ice. The fish were very active from the start jumping all over the lake. There were some surplus Winter steelhead that ODFW planted from the North Fork of the Nehalem Rivern but there were also a surprising amount of trout left over from last fall. A lot of 2-3lbers and some even larger than that. They were not however interested in anything we had to offer. I tried some power eggs with scent, two colors of cured sand shrimp, cured prawns, salmon eggs, worms, spinners, spoons and some wiggle warts to no avail. My fishing partner for the day Sergio tried powerbait, a fly or two and a spinner also with nothing to show. Finally after about six hours I said screw it and threw on a half ounce weight and three power eggs with no scent and cast out as far as I could. After just a few seconds it was fish on! A nice 14 inch Rainbow trout! Then I cast back out again in a slightly different spot and bam another one, this one was at least 2lbs but wrapped the line around a submerged tree and off he went. A few minutes later I got one about 13 inches. Then Sergio got into some action scoring two nice fat trout, one of which got wrapped around a tree branch (this time un-submerged) and off that one went. I then caught about a 6 inch native cutthroat that I carefully released. We ate a lot of hot dogs, drank a lot of Mt. Dew and caught some fish! Not bad for winter time trout fishing! I am planning several return trips over the next week, I'll make sure and write about them when I get a chance. Tight lines!

Well just got my new 2011 fishing license and tags so I'm just dying to go fishing. First I just wanna apologize for not keeping up with this blog, it's something I'm going to focus more on in the upcoming year. With all the rain so far this winter it's been real tough fishing. Not that the fish magically disappear or anything but tactics must change and they change to ones I don't particularly enjoy. Bait and drift fishing are the preferred methods when the waters high and those are two types of fishing that I just don't get as much fulfillment out of. Spinners and jigs and the likes will still produce but it can be hard to get to where you need to be which is right up against the bank and on the bottom behind boulders and such. Well anyways the rivers are on the drop and I'm ready to hit em! Who's with me?!?!

After two more skunks I decided to get a book on drift fishing! Very good investment as it was only five dollars! LOL I've also decided to start making some spinners to sell! I make a mean spinner and now they're even better. I will be setting up a website to sell them from in the upcoming weeks so stay tuned for that! On the 16th of this month Pop-A-Top yarn is having a drift off on the Wilson River, it is the Lonnie Bird Memorial Drift OFF. Should be a lot of fun and hopefully with my new found knowledge I will win! There will be great prizes along with a raffle, and the raffle will be a good one! Very nice items up to win! Until next time, stay safe people!

First OFF I'd like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas! I hit the Wilson on Wednesday with 3 other guys from Oregon Fishing Forum, Autofisher (who makes the best damn fishing yarn on the face of the planet, check it out Pop-A-Top yarn), FluffyFisherman, and Nick-106. It was a fun trip but no fish. Nick had a nice take down but didn't get it hooked. It was pretty chilly or so the others said. I don't get cold very easy, I was just fine. Although the handwarmer's were a nice treat. Up high the water was pretty clear, but down by the old burned down guide shop it was kinda high but had perfect color. Hopefully next trip will offer more fish wise. Be safe everyone!

So after I posted about my trip to the Wilson today I decided to go to Safeway for some grub. Didn't make it past the mailbox. I opened my mailbox and what should I find but a nice fat check from Social Security! Totally out of the blue, I wasn't expecting any money from then till February or so. Just in time to get my baby girl a much deserved Christmas present. She's the best and keeps me going through the hard times. I don't know what I would do without her. Now if I could only get her to land a Salmon/Steelhead, that will be one of my happiest memories for sure. Have a Merry Christmas everyone, and tight lines!
You know it amazes me that sometimes the fishless days are as good or better than the days you catch your limit. It was nice out there on the Wilson today. Not so much as a nibble for me, in fact I only saw one bobber down all day and it didn't result in a hook up. The best part about today was I got to spend it with my beautiful girlfriend Candyce. She took her first cast with a real Steelhead rod instead the ultralight she normally uses. I also taught her the basics of float fishing as well as drifting. She also got to cast a bait casting reel for the first time. She didn't even backlash!!! I was so proud! LOL The water was just about perfect color but was running pretty fast. Had a good time fishing with several guys from www.oregonfishingforum.com I would have a couple pics to post but looks like last trip I made I must have bumped the on button on my camera so the batteries were dead for this trip. Next up I think is going to be Wednesday. Probably be my last trip of the year.

It's been raining real hard the last 3 or 4 days. The rivers are all blown out, I don't feel well. It's just been an all around lousy week so far. Hopefully tomorrow will bring better things! I have high hopes for fishing the Wilson this weekend, it looks like the rain may shut off in time to hit the river and catch me some fish. It will be nice to get on the water again. I've had a ton of stress lately and need all the time I can get on the water. I guess I'm just gonna hit the sack, goodnight.
